DESIGN: AeroVantage - Transition Mechanism - Proposed Methods - Long Arms w/o Elbows

Pros & Cons:

Pros:

Reasonably simple transition Mechanism.
Minimal downloading on wing during transition.
Thrust vectors of both PropRotors are always parallel.

Cons:

The PropRotors and transition frame would have to be moved 2.4 feet further ahead than shown in the drawing below to put the center of lift at 25% of the wing's chord during hover. TOO BAD because the mechanism is relatively simple. See bottom of this page for calculations.

During transition the large PropRotor will put a downwash on the horizontal stabilizer.

The wrist joints are not on the centerline of the motors.

Preliminary Rough Notes:

Aft portion of the wing moves with the small PropRotor.

Note that there are not Forward and Aft PropRotors on this arraignment, just large and small PropRotors.

Move PropRotors further forward and decrease the gap between the propulsors, if possible.

Add a front view and decrease the lateral stagger.

Currently, the gaps are; Cruise = 153.3". Hover = 85.0". Difference = 68.3"

Both arms (and X-shaft) rotate CCW; when viewed from the port side. They rotate 180º.

Both motors rotate CCW; when viewed from the port side. They rotate 90º.

Drive the motor rotation from the arm rotation, by

Miter gears, or
Put motors in the arms and drive both rotations by worm and partial wheels.

Bury the X-shafts in the wings.

There will be one arm per motor.

The fore and the aft arms could be located side-by-side or the rear onto of the front

Mechanically link all arm and motor rotations buy a 'box' shafting or by 'H' shafting arraignment.

The fore and the aft proprotor thrust will tend to cancel each other with in the transitioning mechanism, thereby requiring a relativly small actuator(s).

The PropRotor assemblies must be moved further forward for balance during hover. I have now moved it 3" forward

Look into reducing the gap between the fore and aft rotors.

Locate the proprotors closer to the fuselage.

Move the X-shaft down and up into the wing, for aerodynamics etc.
