Reasons for Seriously Considering Sensorless Control:

Sensorless control is simpler since it does not require sensors such as the Hall Effect or absolute device, etc.

Aero-rotors will startup in basically a no-load situation.

The change in rotational speed is slow.

The range of rotational speeds is small.

The motor's neutral-point is available.

The sensorless should/may work well with multi-phasing.

Concerns:

The reliability of Sensorless controls may be a concern.

The pilot may instigate a change in power that might be too large and rapid for the sensorless circuitry.

Ideas:

There is the intent of giving each of the 2 bilateral motors a pair of totally separate electrical circuits for redundancy. The raises the possibility of joining the Y junction (neutral-point) of circuit-A in one motor with the Y junction of circuit-A in the other motor. This would also be done for the pair of B-circuits. The objective being that a single sensorless controller might control the A-circuits in both motors during startup and operation. The same would apply to the B-circuits.

Consider having a change in the throttle setting, both rate and amount, be transmitted to the controller so that the computer can immediately apply this information to the reference value of the current [2R·I_max]. The computer will know the inertia of the rotors and their speed so it might be able to calculate the maximum allow rate of RRPM change and also be able to temporarily adjust the communication point from ⁺/_-30º.

Consider hand starting of the rotors so as to create the initial back-EMF.

Kelly - Sensorless:

It appears that the Kelly sensorless controllers do not connect to the motor's neutral-point. Perhaps I should buy the appropriate controller chip etc and build the control and power circuits. See white binder [Control Motor].

In addition, the maximum voltage of a Kelly Sensorless controller is only 120V. Note that PC's cables for 72V weigh 6.8K (15lbs)
